Features of energy efficient motors
(i) The performance of EEM is better than STM under full load, partial load and no load conditions. Due to higher efficiency, EEM not only saves energy but also contributes to reducing its demand.
(ii) EEM has less thermal stress so cooling requirement is less. EVM bearings run 10°C cooler than STM. This doubles the insulation life. EEM windings operate at 20°C which increases insulation life by four times.
(iii) Since EEM has less losses as their slip is smaller than the standard motor. This smaller slip causes less torque than the standard motor so energy efficient motor is not suitable for applications where high starting torque is required.
(iv) When the slip of the motor is small, its speed is high. Higher speeds result in more power drawn by the motor so the energy saved by an energy efficient motor may be less. Energy efficient motors can be employed to eliminate this problem.
(v) Generally EEM operates at higher PF than STM. This results in lower losses. This also saves money for PF correction. In very rare cases EEM may have lower PF than STM.
(vi) EEM has higher starting current than STM due to which short circuit protection sometimes gets compromised.
