Describe in detail the energy conservation devices in electrical machines?

Energy conservation devices

We know that energy conservation means energy saving. If such devices are used in the power system which achieve energy efficiency as a result of low power consumption, they are called energy conservation devices. By using these energy conservation devices, heat loss in the environment is controlled. These devices are as follows-

motor soft starter

By soft starter, load and torque can be temporarily reduced in the starting position of the motor. By this, the voltage of the motor can be increased gradually, which produces high acceleration in the motor. By this, linear acceleration slope is provided. By this, the value of high current is reduced. Due to inductive load on the induction motor, current lags behind the voltage. This situation is present on most of the electrical equipment. In this situation, capacitive load is used to increase the power factor. For this, parallel capacitor or synchronous motor is used. Reducing the excitation current of the motor also reduces the value of power factor.

Energy saving mode in soft starter

In case of low load operation of the motor, by reducing the voltage, the excited current also reduces, due to which the power factor can be improved. The current of the motor is divided into two parts i.e. active current and reactive current, due to which the power factor improves.

Advantages of Soft Starter The following are the advantages of soft starter as compared to normal starter-

(i) With the help of soft starter the power rate is reduced at maximum demand condition whereas with normal starter the power rate value is same under all conditions.

(ⅱ) In this the value of voltage and current changes slowly. Through this the transients generated in the voltage and current peaks are reduced.

(iii) By this the power factor can be improved in each cycle, because it converts KVA power.

(iv) Surge power is reduced by soft starter.

(v) Heat dissipation of the motor is reduced, thus increasing the efficiency.

(vi) This increases the operating time of the motor.

(vii) By this, the acceleration time of the motor can also be changed.

(viii) The acceleration of the motor started by this is uniform.

(ix) It can improve the performance under loaded and unloaded conditions.

(x) Energy saving up to 5% can be achieved by reducing the scheduled 3 hours of motor operation.

Automatic Star-Delta Converter

Economical consumption of energy helps in the development of any country. Power consumption should be controlled efficiently. Energy consumption can be reduced by automatic converter operation of star-delta starter used as starter. When the motor is operated at less than 50% load, the motor is operated in star mode and energy is saved.

If the motor operates with more than 50% load then it is operated in delta mode. In this way, energy can be saved due to change in star and delta mode.

Motors of any capacity can be operated by automatic star-delta converter.

Therefore, the advantages of automatic star-delta converter can be explained through the following points-

(i) Energy conservation takes place through this.

(ii) It reduces the maximum demand

(iii) This improves the power factor.

At present, 80% of the motors in the industrial sector are AC induction motors. Therefore, to make energy conservation effective in the operation of these motors, there should be automatic conversion of star-delta, to do this this starter is used.

Relationship between Star and Delta Powers- Due to change in the values of current and voltage in star and delta combination, the value of power in line and phase changes. The value of line voltage V₁ is same for both delta and star load. Similarly, the value of phase impedance Zpli will be same for delta and star load.
