Energy conservation with lighting control gear

Lighting control gear is a group of devices for the system. Through this, the operation and illumination of the lighting system can be controlled. The reflection factor of the light source is an important factor for illumination control. When light is emitted by a light source, the light is reflected by the surface. Therefore, the ratio of reflected optical energy and incident optical energy is called the reflection coefficient.

The need for lighting control

The need for light control is essential for energy conservation. Its need can be explained through the following points-

(i) To avoid shadow and glare control – If the installation of light sources is not done according to the correct rules, then the illumination of light becomes useless. This light is wasted in the form of glare and shadow. Therefore, it is necessary to control the light.

(ii) For Uniforum Illumination Area- It is necessary to control the light energy emitted by the light source to make it uniform. Due to its illumination in the right direction, sufficient light energy is obtained in factories, drawing rooms, offices, shops etc. This light energy is equivalent to the prescribed illumination values.

To ensure uniform illumination, the light source must be isolated from atmospheric light.

(iii) Installation Height – The height of light sources is a major component of illumination energy. Hence, illumination is also controlled according to height. In rooms with large floor area, the light source is hung on the ceiling to get sufficient illumination energy. Both direct and indirect light is obtained in ceiling illumination arrangements.

(iv) Space between Light Sources – For controlling illumination, the space between light sources is arranged in such a way that the light is distributed uniformly by both the sources. Space illumination energy ratio is the main factor for this control.

Components of Lighting Control Gear

Devices by which the current in the lamp circuit is controlled are called lighting gear. These control the discharge of gases in the lighting lamps. If there is a need to regulate the supply once the lamp is started, then lighting controlling gear is used.

These are of the following types-

(i) Igniters – This type of drive is used for gas discharge lamps. Due to the high value of internal resistance in gas discharge lamps, the peak voltage is more than the operating voltage. Igniters are also used for fluorescent lamps. In fluorescent lamps, high voltage is provided to the electrodes in a few seconds, due to which the emission of electrons starts. Glow starter is used to provide high voltage. Providing high voltage for a longer time affects the life of the lamp.

(ii) Ballast – It is used in fluorescent lamps. Through this, the current for the lamps is regulated. Ballast provides sufficient voltage to start the lamps. If fluorescent lamps are connected without ballast, then the life span of the lamps is adversely affected due to high current.

(iii) LED Driver – LED driver is a self-regulated power supply device. Power is supplied to the LED through this. LED is a light source with minimum energy consumption and requires a regulated power supply. LED driver is a different type of device compared to a normal power supply. Driver is also used for the protection of LED.

(a) Types of LED Drivers- LED drivers are classified into the following categories based on different types of installations-

  • Internal LED Drivers- This type of LED drivers are used for household LED lights. While replacing LED bulbs, the LED drivers are installed in the same assembly box. It is shown in the picture.
  • External LED Drivers – The structure of external LED drivers is different from that of internal LED drivers. They are installed outside the LED box. They are used for outdoor lighting, commercial lighting, street lighting, etc.

The main reason for most LED bulbs getting damaged is the failure of LED drivers.

(b) Selection of LED Drivers – LED drivers are selected on the basis of constant current driver and constant voltage driver.

Constant output current and overvoltage are provided by constant current driver. For example, 700 mA output current and voltage range 4V-13V DC are provided by constant current driver.

Constant voltage LED driver provides stable output voltage which results in high output current.

For example the voltage value obtained is 12V to 24V DC output while the current value is 1.04A.

Additionally, LED drivers are installed based on the suitable location.
