What is demand side energy management? Explain its importance?

Friends, today in this article we will learn  about demand side energy management and control.  I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.

Demand Side Energy Management and Control

Energy management control systems (EMCS) can be designed to reduce and control the energy consumed in buildings by monitoring the energy use of the various appliances used and adjusting them accordingly. For example, EMCS can automatically monitor indoor ambient temperature, fan speed status, close and open air handling unit dampers and control lighting patterns.

The two main techniques of demand side management are as follows-

Energy Conservation and Efficiency Programme

A lot of energy can be saved through energy efficiency. The objective of demand side management is to improve energy efficiency. The use of energy efficient appliances should be ensured by implementing standards and uniformity programmes. Energy efficiency improvement measures can meet the increase in demand. The use of such resources reduces the cost as compared to conventional based schemes.

Energy conservation and efficiency measures are the only alternatives to energy sources. There are many opportunities to reduce energy consumption, such as by reducing demand through the use of efficient lighting, variable speed drives, etc., and thus reducing costs.

load feedback program

Load management can change the electrical patterns of consumers. Load management involves planning, development and implementation which aims to prepare a load profile of consumers, which includes all the daily and weather based information available. This gives better utility efficiency. Hence, power generation from low capacity units can be reduced. Service reliability can be improved by reducing forceful outages and load shedding. Reducing peak load can make a difference in the construction of new power generating stations. In India, better control of agricultural load can produce better results.

A load response program is a response to the wholesale price of electricity in the market to initiate activities related to the supply situation. A load response program can prevent the grid system from exceeding the prescribed peak limit.

Load feedback programmes are of the following two types-

(i) Reliability Based Programme – Such programmes operate in response to a possible event in the future. Hence, these are also called possible event programmes. This type of programme is used in emergency situations. This situation occurs due to shortage of energy due to low production and high demand. This type of programme is also called emergency demand response programme.

(ii) Market/Price Based Programme – These programmes are based on the market price of electricity and help in reducing the consumer’s bills through time-varying rates. This category includes programmes which are used for time-locked usage rates, real-time pricing, lock-in rates and two-part tariffs. Consumers participating in these programmes reduce their load during critical times when prices are very high and they pay some additional incentives to improve the reliability of the system. These programmes include day-to-day demand response programmes where the user responds to price signals. The user reduces his load when the day-to-day and day-to-day rates are higher than the time-based rates. These programmes are implemented by direct load control by the utility and the consumer and are distributed by the same method.

The factors which influence the response are as follows-

Load Response Tools – Due to participation in load response programs, the consumer needs “load response tools”. These tools help in reducing the use of electric energy as per the requirement. Two types of load response tools, load response management and energy conservation measures and improvements are used to improve the peak hours of electricity use through the equipment and procedures of the communication system. Through these two tools, the consumer can reduce the consumption of electric energy during the most important hours. By shifting its load towards the utility grid, it can be shifted towards co-generation. The consumer cannot use the electricity completely.
