  2. Inform your workers – Your workers should be encouraged to ensure that windows and doors are securely closed and alerted to any problems.
  3. Temperature Controlling after Weather Variation- The maximum temperature change situation occurs after the weather change. During summer days, the room temperature is kept at 24-25°C, while during rainy days it is increased to 30°C due to temperature variation. After the increase in temperature, the extra load can be reduced.
  4. Use of Timer – Timers are used to conserve energy in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. For example, if the temperature in an air conditioning system is set to 30°C, then when this temperature is reached, it is switched off by the timer, due to which energy losses can be prevented.
  5. Installation of Thermostat – In present times, thermostat control system is used to control temperature changes. It is in the form of a strip, which expands and contracts according to the temperature. Up to 30% annual energy can be saved through thermostat based air conditioning system.
  6. Monitoring of Filter- Filters in HVAC systems should be changed regularly. Changing of filters is recommended by the maintenance department.
  7. Avoid to Maximum Demand – Energy conservation can be optimized by reducing energy use during high demand periods so that air conditioning, lighting and other electrical units do not need to run at full load.
  8. Avoid to Maximum Large Size- Large size should be avoided in HVAC system. Due to large size, the operating cost of HVAC system is high. Due to large size, temperature control takes more time.
  9. Application of Fans – It is necessary to use fans in HVAC system. Under this, the temperature can be easily controlled.
  10. Avoid Unnecessary Light- Switch off the lights of unnecessary areas and replace the bulbs with CFL which consumes less electrical energy. Thus less heat is emitted.
  11. Insulation of Building – Roof surfaces, walls and ducts should be insulated to reduce temperature loss in winter and temperature gain in summer. Hot/cold air ducts should be insulated to ensure protection against leakage.

Auditing the HVAC System

Auditing in HVAC system can be explained on the basis of the following points-

  1. Access Existing Conditions – Under this, all existing information related to heating, ventilation and air conditioning is collected, such as number of units, current utilization capacity, operating temperature of the system, measurement of system temperature, thermal insulation, fitting of ducts, area of windows, structure of the building, cooling system of roofs etc.
  2. Find Consumption and Savings – Auditing is done to find sources of savings potential from heating, ventilation and air conditioning capacities. Current consumption should be determined from the available information and savings potential should be found in the existing system.
  3. Access Opportunity for Increasing HVAC Energy Efficiency – To increase energy efficiency, the following points should be examined-

(i) The HVAC system should be turned off and its operating time should be minimized when there is no one in the building.

(ii) The time of use of heating, ventilation and air conditioning should also be reduced. These should be switched off when not needed and variable speed drives and direct digital control systems should be used.

(iii) Extremely hot and extreme cold zones should be identified. Each zone should have separate control. To protect from direct sun rays, there should be shade of trees around the house and ceiling fans should be used.

(iv) Unnecessary heating and cooling should be minimised and thermostats should be used to control them.

(v) Regulators with larger area should be installed with economical heat recovery system. Evaporators and capacitors should be used.

(vi) Walls, ceilings, hot water and cold water piping should be properly insulated.
