Energy conservation is possible by using energy efficient motors. Energy efficient motors produce uniform output power. Less input power is used in them as compared to other motors. Higher efficiency can be achieved by reducing energy consumption through energy efficient motors. It lasts longer than standard motors of the same size. Energy efficient motors provide high output power with minimum input energy. The structure of these motors is different from other motors. Structural changes are made in them. Silicon steel is used in them and thick wires are used to reduce resistance. They are made energy efficient by less air gap between the rotor and the stator. In these, the rotor ring is made of copper instead of aluminum. Energy efficient motors work on the principle of high magnetism.

In magnetic motors, a magnetic field is generated between the rotor and the stator, due to this magnetic field torque is generated in the motor. When the magnetic field generated in these motors changes, the speed of the rotor also changes.

High efficiency induction motors are generally of synchronous and asynchronous types. The main feature of synchronous motors is that the speed of motors is not affected by load. The value of slip in it is zero. The structure of synchronous motor is different from that of induction motor. It has stator, rotor and exciter. DC supply is given to the exciter separately. This DC supply depends on the capacity of the motor. 220V DC supply is required according to the normal capacity. This is the format of synchronous machine. By changing its functioning, it can be converted into a synchronous generator. The following motors play an important role in energy conservation-

Fractional horsepower motor

Its rating is less than 1HP. This type of motor comes under the category of high efficiency motor. Under these motors, the frame size is prepared by special design and materials. These motors are used in domestic and industrial areas.

Cage type and Shaded Pole Motor are placed in the category of Asynchronous Motors. In this, the speed of the motors changes with the load. Standard motors consume 870 kWh energy units per unit for normal capacity whereas energy efficient motors consume 804 kWh units for the same capacity. The copper content in the above motors is more than normal. They have less air friction losses. Its efficiency is 2% to 6% more than that of normal motors. The efficiencies of these motors can be explained by the following curve-

The given curve shows the curve for a standard and energy efficient motor of 15 kW rating and 4 poles. This curve is drawn between load and efficiency. It is clear from the curve that the efficiency of the energy efficient motor is 2% to 6% higher than the standard motor.

When there is a need to replace motors in domestic and industrial sectors, using these motors with old motors reduces energy consumption.

Energy efficient motors were first used in 1970. At that time most of the companies manufacturing standard type motors planned to manufacture them. According to the features of energy efficient motors, changes were made in the design, manufacturing material and size of the motors.

In standard motors, the efficiency is low at low load conditions. The main reason for this is the motor design. While manufacturing energy efficient motors, the main aim is to increase the energy efficiency. This also affects the power factor of the motors. In ordinary motors, the power factor is lagging due to the effect of inductive load. This is included as energy loss.

The main feature of an energy efficient motor (EEM) is displayed at half-load. In this condition, the efficiency of the motor is the same as the efficiency at full-load whereas standard type motors (STM) have lower efficiency at half-load condition.
