Friends, today in this article we will learn about energy supply change. I am going to give you information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.
In the context of energy supply transformation
- Changing Energy Sources – The share of oil has decreased from 41% to 36% from 1970 to 2000. While the share of coal increased from 25% to 27% during these years. The share of natural gas has increased from 17% to 20% and the share of nuclear energy has also increased. There has been very little change in the share of energy sources since 2000. There has been negligible change in the share of nuclear energy sources. Therefore, CO₂ emissions will increase in future due to increasing energy demand.
- Increasing Role of Gas- The use of gas in domestic purposes is constantly increasing. Nowadays, the use of gas in vehicles is also constantly increasing. The consumption of gas in power generation and other uses is increasing day by day. Revised estimates show that gas reserves are more than earlier estimates so there may be some unknown reserves. Some parts of the world like USSR, Middle East have gas reserves. The importance of gas in future will depend on gas transportation through reliable pipelines.
- Unpredictable Role of Nuclear Energy- Nuclear energy has increased between 1970 and 1980. But the Chernobyl accident in 1980 has caused a hindrance in this field. The production of nuclear energy is clean and cheap. India has sufficient reserves of uranium. Common citizens are afraid of its energy production because there is a fear of causing great harm to the body. Therefore, the increase in this energy is the biggest problem. Because of this, the expansion in that field is very less, although the greenhouse effect is reduced by the use of this field.
- Improvement of Efficiency in Energy Supply- Priority should be given to increasing the efficiency of power supply because a lot of energy is spent in the production, transmission and distribution of electricity. The efficiency of already established power generating stations can be improved by modernizing them. The efficiency of modern power generating stations can be increased by using gases in place of coal and oil and by using high heat input turbines.
In developed countries, losses in transmission and distribution of electricity are less than 10%. Whereas in developing countries these losses are more than 20%. These losses can be reduced by improving the power factor using shunt capacitors. In future, cogeneration will prove to be very useful for energy conservation. There is a great possibility of increase in medium and small cogeneration plants. Many petroleum refining and chemical industries require more heat and power. Therefore, they will adopt more cogeneration. At present only 157% of electricity is produced by cogeneration. There is a great possibility of increase in this percentage in new systems.
- Displacement and Cleaning of Coal- Among the fossil fuels, coal is the most dangerous and harmful fuel in the environment because it causes excessive CO2 emission and increases the amount of CO2 in greenhouse gases. But replacing coal is not easy. In the world’s two largest countries, India and China, electricity production from coal will increase and environmental problems will increase.
The countries which have sufficient reserves of coal, their priority is to generate electricity from coal because due to low price of coal, the generation of electricity becomes cheaper.
Over the past few years, technologies have been developed to reduce the emissions of gases from coal into the air. If these technologies are used globally, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 25%.
- Displacement of Oil- Replacement of oil is not possible. If replacement of oil was possible, then there would be very few problems in the environment and the greenhouse effect would also be reduced. The problem of foreign exchange conversion would be reduced in many countries. When the price of oil increases, it can be replaced to some extent by CNG.
Oil has high energy density and is easy to transport. This is why it is used more in automobiles.
