In view of rising energy prices, improving energy management is a major priority for any energy manager. There are many new energy-saving techniques available, but they do not guarantee a successful energy program in themselves. Energy managers in any energy system must keep the following points in mind for good energy management:

  1. No project should be approved without having full information on when, where and how energy is to be used. A thorough investigation of energy use patterns is the first and most important step in any energy program.
  2. Much energy can be saved by controlling the use of energy systems (such as lighting) by installing more efficient equipment (such as T-8 lamps), i.e. only using as much energy as is needed and switching it off when not needed.
  3. Well-managed and maintained services can achieve more successful energy programs than adding to the number of technological equipment.
  4. Good rendering and good energy management can achieve high rate of energy conservation and will also reduce the energy cost.
  1. Maintenance should be done in the power system as per the requirement. For example, when the equipment is new, there is no need for maintenance but when it becomes old, it needs to be repaired from time to time. Hence, there should be maintenance facility as per the requirement.
  2. Maintenance and energy management serve different purposes and one cannot replace the other. Cleaning of equipment, replacing faulty lamps etc. are part of good maintenance. But installing more efficient lamps is part of energy management. These differences should be taken into account when budgeting.
  3. Automated energy management systems cannot compensate for poor system design. If heating and cooling loads are not well estimated or the load measuring equipment is faulty, then automated energy management systems cannot correct the performance of the system, so energy managers should keep these things in mind and keep checking the energy system from time to time.
