The main features of energy efficient motors are as follows:
- The output of energy efficient motors is higher than standard motors (STM) at full load, partial load and idle condition. These motors also reduce energy demand along with increasing energy efficiency. The size of the supply cable of energy efficient motors also changes.
- The temperature rise during operation in energy efficient motors is less than that of STM. The temperature of bearings in energy efficient motors is up to 10°C lower than that of STM motors, which doubles the life of the motor’s insulation. In EEM, the life of the coil insulation is increased up to 4 times.
- EEM has less losses. The value of slip in them is less than STM. Due to less slip, the starting torque is less. Hence EEM is not used in places where the highest torque is required.
- When the value of slip is low, the speed of the motor is high. Hence, more power flows in the EEM due to high speed. This leads to energy loss. Various methods can be used to eliminate the above defect.
- EEM is operated at a higher power factor than STM. The main reason for this is minimum losses. Hence the cost incurred for power factor improvement is less.
- In EEM, the starting current is higher as compared to STM.
