Friends, today in this article we will learn about the types of co-generation based on the use of energy sequence. I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.
Types of cogeneration based on the energy sequence used
Based on the energy sequence used, cogeneration is of the following types:
Topping cycle cogeneration plant
In the topping cycle the fuel is first used to produce energy and then it is used to convert it into mechanical energy. This is a useful plant. It is shown in Figure 1.

Other systems that come under the topping cycle system are as follows-
(i) Gas turbine and diesel engine first produce electrical and mechanical energy, then the waste heat recovery boiler produces steam to drive the steam turbine. Since this is a mixed cycle, it is called mixed cycle topping system.
(ii) A steam turbine produces electrical and mechanical energy using steam at high pressure and then uses the exhausted steam at low pressure in other processes. This is called steam turbine topping system or Rankine cycle cogeneration topping system.
(iii) Diesel and gas engines first produce electrical and mechanical energy. After this, the heat emitted by the engine is converted into other processes.
(iv) In gas turbine topping system the steam is used to drive the generator to produce electricity and then the exhaust gases from the heat recovery boiler are used for steam production and heat production.
bottoming cycle cogeneration plant
In the bottoming cycle, the primary engine produces thermal energy at high temperature and high pressure and the exhaust gas is then used by a heat recovery boiler to produce steam.
The bottoming cycle is used where manufacturing processes require very high temperatures and release heat at high temperatures.
In cement, steel, ceramic gas and petro-chemical industries, furnaces and chimneys are used at high temperatures. Therefore, bottoming cycle is used here.
In the bottoming cycle, high temperature heat is produced by burning fuel in the furnace. The waste gases are then used to produce heat by a waste heat recovery boiler.
Applications of Bottoming Cycle
Following are the major applications of the bottoming cycle:
(i) Bottoming cycle is used for high temperature furnace. Through this the heat loss is utilized in heat production.
(ii) Bottoming cycle is used for heat generation in milk powder factory.
(iii) They are used in industrial bakeries.
